Head Coach/Manager, Sport

The Head Coach/Manager, Sport is responsible for managing and delivering sliding sport programs for Whistler Sport Legacies (WSL) at Whistler Sliding Centre (WSC).  As liaison with various sport service stakeholders this role is the primary point of contact for sport users, and provides guidance, leadership, and development opportunities to athletes, coaches, and event planners.  With an unwavering belief in sport development in Canada, in accordance with WSL’s mission, vision, and values, this role is focused on the delivery of the WSL sport plan as it relates to WSC.

Reporting to the Managing Director, WSC and the Vice President, Sport this role works co-operatively with local, national, and international sport organizations to directly enhance the quality of sport delivery at WSC while growing sport.  This role continually evolves sport delivery and strategic goals for WSC.  This is an evolving position and requires flexibility to assist the team with other activities or initiatives including the requirement to work evenings and weekends as required.  This Regular Full Time role is an evolving position and requires flexibility to assist the team with other activities or initiatives including the requirement to work evenings and weekends as required.

Responsibilities: 

Coaching

  • Develop, and deliver sliding sport programs in conjunction with stakeholders in accordance with WSL, IF, and NSO standards
  • Schedule and manage the training of sliding athletes as required to meet program targets
  • Develop and lead an optimal daily training environment including training plans and review of training logs for sliding athletes and coaches
  • Work with sport partners to develop and implement athlete and program benchmarks and track athlete development against benchmarks
  • Provide sport specific coaching expertise to all affiliated training groups and coaches
  • Manage the development and training of WSL Bobsleigh pilots
  • Coach and mentor individuals, and groups, in one of the three (3) sliding sport disciplines (Luge, Bobsleigh, Skeleton)
  • Ensure effective communication with guests, athletes, coaches and officials including the ability to deal with difficult situations and complaints
  • Develop and execute an athlete recruitment plan for all sliding sports

Business and Operational Deliverables

  • In conjunction with the VP, Sport and Managing Director, WSC; develop and manage an annual business plan and overall budget for the WSC Sliding Sport department
  • Accountable for daily, weekly, and monthly reconciliation of the overall Sport Services budget
  • Support the development of new sport business initiatives
  • Champion and adhere to all WSL corporate policies, procedures, and contribute to the development of WSC policies and procedures
  • Ensure an effective information flow between WSC leadership team, other WSL departments, venues, WSC staff, volunteers, and contractors
  • Work closely with our Marketing, Communication, and Sales colleagues/department to promote event and sport programs to the fullest
  • Liaise with other WSL venues and sport managers to ensure seamless delivery of sport initiatives across all venues

  • Assist the team with other duties as assigned or required

Sport Management

Working with the Vice President, Sport:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a Sliding sport plan to grow sport and ensure WSC is a centre for sport excellence in conjunction with internal and external stakeholders
  • Manage and develop a sport communication plan
  • Develop and lead a Sliding Sport Advisory Group (SSAG) comprised of internal and external stakeholders
  • Support the delivery of WSL multi-sport programming
  • Proactively continue to evolve Sliding Sport programs in the Sea to Sky Corridor in conjunction with our viaSport Regional Alliance partnership
  • Ensure open and transparent communication with user groups and participate in regular meetings of the SSAG; participate as a member of the SSAG
  • Develop and implement mechanisms to enhance the quality of all WSC sport programming
  • Work with Guest Services to facilitate sport schools and multi-sport program development
  • Liaise with partners and user groups in planning and scheduling development programs
  • Manage and develop seasonal sport programs well in advance of marketing deadlines
  • Support sport organizations in preparation and submission of grant applications for programs and events
  • Support WSC’s relationship with both International Sport Federations (IFS), International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) and the Fédération Internationale de Luge (FIL) and relevant National Sport Organizations (NSOs)
  • Responsible for development of “Operating Principles” that include “User Agreements” between the NSO’s and WSC as defined in the “Sport Access Expectations” of the “Post Games Operating Agreement”
  • Assist with competition event planning and execution as the leading member of the Race Organizing Committee
  • Maintain communication to all inquiries regarding athletes, volunteers, coaches, public, recruiting, etc
  • Maintain sport equipment inventory
  • Develop, monitor, and report on sport feedback
  • Work with leadership for execution
  • Assist WSC with new and on-going job and venue specific training
  • Assist with other special initiatives: friends & family days, public recruitment events, etc.

Education/Experience: 
  • Diploma, certificate or degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a related field (e.g., sport management, business administration, etc.) or equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • Coaching certification required
  • Previous experience in developing and managing an operational budget required
  • Management, supervisory, leadership, interpersonal skills, and experience required
  • Strong experience and technical understanding of sliding sports required
  • Experience establishing and maintaining stakeholder relationships required
  • Knowledge of sport development and the Long Term Athlete Development Model required
  • Event management / coordination experience preferred
  • Knowledge of the IFs and IOC structure, requirements, and rules preferred
  • Experience and established relationships with the BCBSA, BCLA, and CLA, FIBT, and FIL an asset
  • Experience and technical understanding of sliding sports an asset
  • Experience and established relationships with NSOs and PSOs an asset
  • Previous experience developing business strategies, operating plans and budgets an asset
  • Previous experience in the field of sport and sport organizations an asset
  • Class 4 Driver’s License or Class 4 Unrestricted Driver’s License an asset
